Great Greenland Visitor Center, The Story of the Seal & Greenland.
The Great Greenland Visitor Center opened in 2017 with the aim of telling the powerful and intertwined story of the seal and humans in Greenland. For centuries, life in Greenland has been closely linked to the seal, which has played a central role in culture, survival and identity. The visitor centre conveys this story through exhibitions, narratives and products.
The story of the seal is the story of Greenland. With the visitor centre, Great Greenland aims to ensure that this cultural heritage is preserved and passed on to future generations – both locally and internationally.
From catch to finished product
Great Greenland purchases sealskins from hunters along the entire coast of Greenland – from Ittoqqortoormiit in the east, via Nanortalik, and up to Qaanaaq. Skins from both harp seals and ringed seals caught by local hunters are collected here.
The skins are transported to Qaqortoq, where they are tanned and dyed with great professional expertise to achieve the highest quality. Some of the skins are further processed in the local sewing workshop, where they are turned into finished products sold by Great Greenland in Qaqortoq, the rest of Greenland, Denmark and by other retailers in Europe.
Tradition, craftsmanship and innovation
Great Greenland is internationally recognised as the world leader in sealskin tanning.
The sewing workshop, established in 1982, works with modern sewing and furrier techniques, while production is based on traditional Greenlandic craftsmanship principles that have existed for millennia.
The visitor centre offers visitors the opportunity to experience the history, craftsmanship and production behind sealskin – and understand its significance for Greenland’s culture and way of life.
Great Greenland was founded in 1977, and the visitor centre opened in 2017 as a window into the company’s work and Greenland’s living cultural heritage. The goal is to spark curiosity and give visitors a deeper understanding of the seal’s importance to life in Greenland.
