Midlings, Large Harp, Black – C

Seal skins are extremely decorative. They can be used, for example, as rugs or as cushions for chairs or sofas. The only limit is your imagination. Seal skins behave in much the same way as other leather goods in terms of wear and tear and maintenance.

All sealskins processed by Great Greenland are caught by Greenlandic Inuit hunters along the Greenlandic coast. All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All sealskins comply with EU legislation on sealskins. Only sealskins caught by Inuit hunters are approved for sale, production and import into the EU.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing is only considered if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing thus saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed unless it is necessary.

Trouser seal: A trouser seal is a ‘retired’ Greenland seal. In other words, it is twice the size of an ordinary Greenland seal. As the seal ages, the spots on its back cluster together to form a trouser-like pattern. A highly decorative hide – typically used as a rug.

MIDDLINGS: LARGE harp seal skin. Very decorative as a rug. Thicker leather than that of an ordinary harp seal.

Harp seal skins are available in several grades: A, B, C, D, E and rejected. A-grade skins have a maximum of two minor flaws. B-grade skins may have up to eight small flaws. C-grade skins may have several small flaws, as well as one or two larger flaws. D-grade skins may have small areas completely devoid of hair or with hard leather. E-grade and rejected skins are typically heavily damaged and can only be used for making small items, after which the rest of the skin is discarded entirely. Seals live in the wild, which is why minor damage that affects the quality often occurs. However, this is also what makes every single seal skin completely unique! The quality grades indicate how perfect the skin is.

Please note: All our hide images are of ‘C’ grade hides.
The skins are all unique and may therefore vary in size and colour shades.

Timeless design &

The story of sealskin is also the story of Greenland’s people; the Inuit. It is the story of a people living in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre to provide information about the seal and its uses. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop.
