About the product
All seal skins processed by Great Greenland are caught by Greenlandic Inuit hunters along the Greenlandic coast. All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All seal skins comply with EU legislation regarding seal skins. Only Inuit-hunted seal skins are approved for sale, production, and import in the EU.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing only occurs if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing thus saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.
Ring Seal:
The ring seal is also known as ‘netside’, and it is probably the seal most people associate with Greenland. Its distinctive markings down its back have been seen on Inuit traditional clothing for hundreds of years, and today the skin is still used for both apparel and interior design.
The ring seal is naturally light grey, but has strong ring markings along its back, which can vary from light grey to almost black. The appearance of the skin varies greatly, but is always decorative. Ring seals are available in both long-haired (LH) and short-haired (KH). The long-haired type has a more fur-like appearance, while the short-haired type is flatter. The short-haired ring seal is also significantly larger than the long-haired one.
Seal skins from ring seals are available in several qualities: A, B, C, D, E, and discarded. A-grade skins have a maximum of two minimal flaws. B-grade skins can have up to eight small flaws. C-grade skins can have several small flaws, as well as one to two larger flaws. D-grade skins can have smaller areas without hair or hard leather. E-grade and discarded skins are typically very damaged skins, which are only used for the production of small items, after which the rest of the skin is completely discarded. Seals live in the wild, which is why small damages often occur, reducing the quality. The quality indications tell how perfect the skin is.
PLEASE NOTE: All our skin images are taken from C-grade skins.
The skins are all unique and can therefore vary in size and colour nuances.
