Midlings, Stor Harp Ice Blue – D

Seal skins are highly decorative. They can be used as, among other things, floor rugs, or as cushions on chairs or sofas. Only imagination sets the limits. Seal skins behave like other leather goods in terms of wear and maintenance.

All seal skins processed by Great Greenland are caught by Greenlandic Inuit hunters along the coast of Greenland. All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All seal skins comply with EU legislation regarding seal skins. Only Inuit-hunted seal skins are approved for sale, production, and import into the EU.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing only comes into question if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing thus saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.

Buksesæl: A Buksesæl is a “retired” harp seal. This means it is twice as large as regular harp seals. With age, the seal’s spots gather on its back, forming a trouser pattern. A very decorative skin – typically used as a floor rug.

MIDDLINGS: LARGE Harp skin. Very decorative as a floor rug. Thicker leather than regular harp seal.

Harp seal skins are available in several qualities: A,B,C,D,E and rejected. A-skins have a maximum of two minimal flaws. B-skins can have up to eight small flaws. C-skins can have several small flaws, as well as one to two larger flaws. D-skins may have smaller areas completely without hair or hard leather. E and rejected skins are typically very damaged skins, which can only be used for the production of small items, after which the rest of the skin is completely discarded. Seals live in the wild, which often results in the small damages that reduce quality. However, this is also what makes each individual seal skin completely unique! The quality indications describe how perfect the skin is.

NOTE: All our skin images are taken of C skins.
The skins are all unique and may therefore vary in size and colour shades.

The story of sealskin is also the story of Greenland’s people; the Inuit. It is the story of a people living in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre to provide information about the seal and its uses. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop.
