About Great Greenland

Great Greenland was founded in 1977 under the name Grønlandsgarveriet by Hans Lassen. Grønlandsgarveriet bought and tanned Greenlandic sealskins, and quickly expanded the business with a sewing workshop, which still produces a large part of Great Greenland’s products today.

Who are we?

Since 1982, Great Greenland has been a public limited company 100% owned by the Greenland Self-Government. Great Greenland’s headquarters are located in Qaqortoq in South Greenland. Here, a skilled staff works with the tanning and production of Greenlandic furs and fur products. Seal fur is still Great Greenland’s speciality, but other Greenlandic furs such as musk ox, lamb, and polar bear are also processed.

All furs produced at Great Greenland originate from animals that have lived wild in the Greenlandic nature and have been caught in accordance with the traditions of the Greenlandic Inuit. Greenlandic sealskins may be imported into the EU due to the European Inuit exception.

Great Greenland produces and sells quality furs, for the benefit of Greenland, as well as design products in clothing & accessories for consumers worldwide. At Great Greenland, we always strive to deliver the best fur product; caught, tanned, and produced in harmony with the Greenlandic nature. We offer fashionable collections, manufactured in a modern design, consisting of Greenlandic sealskin, combined with other exciting materials.

When you shop at Great Greenland, you directly support the Greenlandic seal hunters. We exist for them and are a 100% self-government-owned Greenlandic company.

Our Story

The story of the use of sealskin is also the story of the people of Greenland; the Inuit. It is the story of a people who live in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Seal meat is a favourite food, and especially in smaller communities, seal hunting is almost as important a part of life today as it was 1000 years ago. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre for the dissemination of the Greenlandic story of the seal and its use. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population, through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop (the sewing room & tannery).
