All seal skins processed by Great Greenland are caught by Greenlandic Inuit hunters along the Greenlandic coast. All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All seal skins comply with EU legislation on seal skins. Only Inuit-caught seal skins are approved for sale, production, and import in the EU.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing only occurs if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing therefore saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.

“Trouser Seal”: A “Trouser Seal” is a “retired” harp seal. That is, it is twice as large as regular harp seals. With age, the seal’s spots gather on its back, forming a trouser pattern. A very decorative skin – typically used as a rug.

Harp seal skins are available in several qualities: A,B,C,D,E and rejected. A-grade skins have a maximum of two minimal flaws. B-grade skins may have up to eight small flaws. C-grade skins may have several small flaws, as well as one or two larger flaws. D-grade skins may have smaller areas completely without hair or hard leather. E-grade and rejected skins are typically very damaged skins, which can only be used for the production of small items, after which the rest of the skin is completely discarded. Seals live in the wild, which is why small damages often occur, degrading the quality. However, this is also what makes each individual seal skin completely unique! The quality indicators tell how perfect the skin is.
