ABOUT SEAL SKIN

Seals live freely in Greenlandic waters and may sustain damage to their fur during their natural life, such as shrimp bites, scratches from fights, and discolouration. Seal skin is therefore a 100% natural product, and no two skins are alike – neither in hair length, colour, damage, or size. Read more about our different seal types and qualities here.

About sealskin

Qualities: At Great Greenland, we work with 6 different qualities of sealskin. A,B,C,D,E & “rejected” skins. The seal lives freely in Greenlandic waters, and throughout its free life, it will have sustained damage to its fur. Shrimp bites, scratches from fights, discolouration, etc. It is therefore not a fur product like other farmed types of fur. Since it is a 100% natural product, it is naturally impossible to standardise hair lengths, colours, or the size of the seal.

A-skins are VERY rare and will always be used for the production of coats. An A-skin has a maximum of 2 minor flaws. B-skins are also gradually becoming rare in our assortment. A B-skin can have up to 8 small flaws (typically shrimp bites). C-skins are the quality we at Great Greenland use ourselves for the vast majority of our finished product productions. A C-skin can have many small flaws, as well as 1-2 larger flaws. These flaws can be worked around in productions. A C-skin can also be used as a fine decorative skin. D-skins have significant flaws. D-skins can have areas completely without hair or hard leather. D-skins are therefore ONLY used for the production of small and medium-sized finished goods, where damaged parts of the skin can be worked around. E-skins and rejected skins are VERY damaged skins. Here, the skin is only used for small finished goods such as keyrings, jewellery, etc.

A,B,C skins can be used for clothing, crafts, and decoration. D,E & rejected skins should not be used as decorative skins as they are too damaged. These skins can only be used for the production of smaller accessories where flaws in the skin can be worked around. It is important to note that on natural skins, flaws will be more noticeable. The dyed skins are therefore more attractive, in the different qualities, as the dyeing has corrected any natural discolouration in the skin. Shrimp bites are also much better concealed in a dyed skin. To the untrained eye, they will in many cases not be visible at all.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing only comes into consideration, if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing therefore saves the skin from being rejected, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.

Harp Seal/Greenland Seal:
The Harp Seal is also called the Greenland Seal or Silk Seal. The name Silk Seal is a very apt description of the skin’s appearance – it is shiny and soft, and it shimmers like silk. The Harp Seal is primarily used for clothing, but it is also highly decorative for interiors.

The Harp Seal is characterised by its natural grey colour and the sporadic spots, that are spread over the skin. Some sealskins have many spots, some have few.

Ringed Seal:
The Ringed Seal is also called netside, and it is probably the seal most people associate with Greenland. Its distinctive markings down its back have been seen on Inuit traditional clothing for hundreds of years, and today the skin is still used for both clothing and interiors.

The Ringed Seal is naturally light grey but has strong ring markings along its back, which can vary from light grey to almost black. The expression of the skin is very varied, but always decorative. Ringed seals are available in both long-haired and short-haired varieties. The long-haired has a more furry appearance, while the short-haired is flatter. The short-haired ringed seal is also often larger than the long-haired.

The story of sealskin is also the story of Greenland’s people; the Inuit. It is the story of a people living in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre to provide information about the seal and its uses. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop.
