The story of the seal & Greenland.

The Visitor Center opened in 2017 and aims to tell the interconnected story of the seal and humanity. In Greenland, people have lived off and with the seal for centuries, and it is the visitor center’s goal to convey this story through both exhibitions and products.

The story of the seal is the story of Greenland, and Great Greenland aims to ensure that this history is not forgotten with the visitor center.

Great Greenland purchases skins from hunters along the entire coast of Greenland. From Ittoqqortoormiit in the East, over Nanortalik in the South, and up to Qaanaaq in the North, we purchase ringed seal and harp seal skins caught by local hunters.
The skins are transported to Qaqortoq, where we tan and dye them to achieve the most beautiful skins possible.
Some of the skins are eventually transformed into products in the sewing workshop and sold in Qaqortoq and at Great Greenland’s other retailers in Europe.

Great Greenland is the world leader in seal skin tanning.

The goal is to be completely chrome-free in the tanning process within a few years.

Great Greenland’s Greenlandic lambskins are already tanned without chrome.

The sewing workshop opened in 1982, and here work is done using modern sewing and furrier techniques. At the same time, production still builds on the same basic principles that have been present in Greenlandic culture for millennia.

Opening hours:
Monday-Friday 10 AM – 4 PM
As well as extraordinary open hours when cruise ships are in port.

For company visits & guided tours, contact the Visitor Center in GL
Aviaja Holm Jensen
Phone: +299 64 71 27
E-mail:aviaja@great-greenland.gl

Timeless design &
responsible production

The story of sealskin is also the story of Greenland’s people; the Inuit. It is the story of a people living in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre to provide information about the seal and its uses. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop.
