All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All seal skins comply with EU legislation regarding seal skins. Only Inuit-hunted seal skins are approved for sale, production, and import in the EU. See more here on the EU’s official website: EU – The Official Seal Regime – Engelsk Read the EU’s official information leaflet here in Danish EU Sælordningen – Dansk
Support the Greenlandic seal hunters – for the benefit of Greenland.

Qualities: At Great Greenland, we work with 6 different qualities of seal skins. A,B,C,D,E & "discarded" skins. The seal lives freely in Greenlandic waters, and throughout its free life, may incur damage to its fur. Shrimp bites, tears from fights, discolorations, etc. Therefore, it is not a fur product like other farmed types of fur. Since it is a 100% natural product, it is naturally not possible to standardize hair lengths, colors, or the size of the seal.

A-grade skins are VERY rare and will always be used for coat production. An A-grade skin has a maximum of 2 minor flaws. B-grade skins are also becoming rare in our assortment. A B-grade skin can have up to 8 small flaws (typically shrimp bites). C-grade skins are the quality we at Great Greenland use ourselves for the vast majority of our finished product productions. A C-grade skin can have many small flaws, as well as 1-2 larger flaws. These flaws can be worked around in production. A C-grade skin can also be used as a nice decorative skin. D-grade skins have significant flaws. D-grade skins can have areas completely without hair or hard leather. D-grade skins are therefore ONLY used for the production of small and medium-sized finished goods, where damaged parts of the skin can be worked around. E-grade skins and discarded skins are VERY damaged skins. Here, the skin is only used for small finished goods such as keychains, jewelry, etc.

A,B,C grade skins can be used for clothing, crafts, and decoration. D,E & discarded skins should not be used as decorative skins as they are too damaged. These skins can only be used for the production of smaller accessories where flaws in the skin can be worked around. It is important to note that flaws will be more visible on natural skins. The dyed skins are therefore more attractive, in the different qualities, as the dyeing has corrected any discolorations in the skin from nature. Shrimp bites are also much better concealed in a dyed skin. To the untrained eye, they will often not be visible at all.

Colors: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colors. Dyeing is only considered if the natural skin is discolored. Dyeing thus saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.

Harp Seal/Greenland Seal:
Harp seal is also called Greenland seal or silk seal. The name silk seal is a very apt description of the skin’s appearance – it is shiny and soft, and it shimmers like silk. The harp seal is primarily used for clothing, but it is also highly decorative for interiors.

The harp seal is characterized by its natural gray color and the sporadic spots that are spread across the skin. Some seal skins have many spots, some have few.

Ringed Seal:
The ringed seal is also called netside, and it is probably the seal most people associate with Greenland. Its distinctive markings along its back have been seen on Inuit clothing for hundreds of years, and today the skin is still used for both clothing and interiors.

The ringed seal is naturally light gray but has strong ring markings along its back that can vary from light gray to almost black. The appearance of the skin varies greatly, but is always decorative. Ringed seals are available in both long-haired and short-haired. The long-haired has a furrier appearance, while the short-haired is flatter. The short-haired ringed seal is also often larger than the long-haired.

All skins sold at Great Greenland are approved under EU legislation on seal skins. Great Greenland is owned by the Greenlandic self-government. Our most important task is to sustain the sealing industry. When you shop at Great Greenland, you automatically support Greenlandic sealing – for the benefit of Greenland. Thank you very much.

The story of sealskin is also the story of Greenland’s people; the Inuit. It is the story of a people living in harmony with nature. In modern Greenlandic society, the seal is still an important part of life and culture. Great Greenland has established a visitor centre to provide information about the seal and its uses. Visitors will understand the seal’s importance to the Greenlandic population through exhibitions and by visiting a living workshop.
