About the product
Seal skins are highly decorative. They can be used, for example, as rugs, or as cushions in chairs or sofas. Only imagination sets the limits. Seal skins behave like other leather goods in terms of wear and maintenance.
All seal skins processed by Great Greenland are caught by Greenlandic Inuit hunters along the Greenlandic coast. All skins are tanned at Great Greenland’s tannery in South Greenland. All seal skins comply with EU legislation on seal skins. Only Inuit-hunted seal skins are approved for sale, production, and import into the EU.

Colours: At Great Greenland, we primarily sell natural skins, but we also dye many skins in popular and fashionable colours. Dyeing only occurs if the natural skin is discoloured. Dyeing thus saves the skin from being discarded, ensuring sustainable production. A beautiful natural skin will never be dyed if there is no need for it.
‘Trousers Seal’: A ‘Trousers Seal’ is a “retired” Greenland seal. This means it is twice as large as regular Greenland seals. With age, the seal’s spots gather on its back, forming a trousers pattern. A very decorative skin – typically used as a rug.
MIDDLINGS: LARGE Harp natural skin. Very decorative as a rug. Thicker in the leather than regular harp seal.
Harp seal skins are available in several qualities: A, B, C, D, E and discarded. A-grade skins have a maximum of two minor flaws. B-grade skins can have up to eight small flaws. C-grade skins can have several small flaws, as well as one to two larger flaws. D-grade skins may have smaller areas completely without hair or hard leather. E-grade and discarded skins are typically very damaged skins, which can only be used for the production of small items, after which the rest of the skin is completely discarded. The seals live in the wild, which is why small damages often occur, reducing the quality. However, this is also what makes each individual seal skin completely unique! The quality ratings indicate how perfect the skin is.
NOTE: All our skin images are of C-grade skins.
The skins are all unique and can therefore vary in size and colour nuances.
